Can’t Help Lovin Dat Man” from Show Boat (1994 Broadway Revival Cast)

music Jerome Kern lyric Oscar Hammerstein II

performance Lonette McKee, Gretha Boston, Michael Bell and Company

In celebration of Lonette McKee’s birthday!

Eleven years before the Hal Prince helmed-Show Boat, Lonette McKee played Julie in a Houston Grand Opera’s production of Show Boat on Broadway (with Ron Raines and Ravenal!).  At the time, she was the first African American woman to play the role on Broadway.  I love the hint of Cleo Laine she brings to the proceedings.

And there are simply not enough good things to be said about Gretha Boston’s Tony-winning performance, or Michael Bell’s.

And I might as well state the obvious, which is that this is one of the greatest songs ever written in any medium.

It has to be good.
